버려진 고양이와 학대받던 사냥개가 한 늪지대의 오래된 집에서 함께 살아가는 이야기를 담고 있다. 

새끼를 곧 낳게 될 한 얼룩 고양이가 있었는데, 고양이는 늪지대 숲 속의 후미진 곳의 오래된 집에 묶여 처량하게 우는 한 사냥개의 울음 소리를 듣게 된다. 고양이는 우거진 늪지대의 숲에서 그 사냥개를 찾게 되고, 개와 고양이의 사이가 나쁘다는 편견에도 불구하고, 사냥개는 고양이와 친구가 되려 한다. 둘은 어울려 보이지 않는 한 쌍이자, 어울려 보이지 않는 가족이 되고자 한다.

사냥개는 고양이를 집 현관 계단 아래(Underneath)에 숨어있도록 한다. 그곳이 고양이가 새끼들과 안전하게 지낼 수 있다고 생각했다. 왜냐하면 그 집에는 Gar-Face로 불리는 남자가 살고 있었는데, 그는 어릴 적 학대 받은 상처로 인해 어른이 되어서는 동물을 사냥하는 것으로 자신을 학대한 사람들에 대한 복수를 하고 있는 인물이었다. 만약 그가 새끼 고양이들을 발견한다면, 늪 지대의 악어 미끼로 던져 버릴지도 모르기 때문이었다. 하지만, 얼룩 고양이과 새끼들은 현관 계단 아래(Underneath)에서 안전했다. 그들이 현관 아래(Underneath)에 있는 한 안전했다……
