마법과 신화에 속하던 투명인간을 저자는 현실성을 갖춘 보이지 않는 인간으로 불러냈다. 그는 체내 색소를 제거하고, 인체의 굴절률을 조작해 공기의 굴절률과 같게 만든다는 나름대로의 논리성을 갖춘 과학적인 설명을 통해 투명인간의 가능성을 예시했다. 하지만 신체의 모든 부분이 투명해지면 빛은 망막에 상이 맺히게 하지 못하고 그대로 통과해버리기 때문에 투명인간 스스로도 아무것도 볼 수 없게 된다.
이런 과학적 논리의 허점에도 이 작품이 여전히 사람들의 마음을 끄는 것은 누구나 마음속 깊이 가지고 있는 은밀하고 사악한 욕망을 그리고 있기 때문이다. 자신의 모습을 '투명인간'에 대입해보며 ‘보이지 않음’이라는 일종의 권력을 휘두르는 그리핀의 모습을 통해 대리만족을 느끼기도 하고, 또 그의 악행과 허망한 죽음을 보며 선과 악, 정의의 문제에 대해 다시금 생각해보는 계기를 가질 수 있다.
