      Overview

Once again my brother and I are in hot water . . .

We weren't planning to mess up the fairy tales. The first two times we did it by accident. But when our magic mirror pulls us into the story of the Little Mermaid, we have no choice but to try and rewrite it. Let's just say the original story does NOT end happily!

      Now we need to:
      - Convince our mermaid to keep her tail
      - Plan a royal wedding
      - Avoid getting eaten by sharks

We've got to find a happy ending for the Little Mermaid . . . before she's fish food and we're lost at sea forever!

Abby's magic, magnetic mirror has done it again! Now she and her little brother Jonah have been sucked through the mirror into the underwater world of the Little Mermaid. It doesn't take them long to turn this children's classic upside down, but with some quick-thinking tinkering, they are able to bring a happy ending?not to mention some laughs to this lovable story. One very funny fractured fairytale adventure.

When Abby's parents cancel her trip to see her Nana in Chicago, she packs her suitcase for a trip her parents would never allow: a voyage into a fairy tale. After two adventures during which they accidentally changed the stories, Abby and her younger brother Jonah have figured out what they can and can't do if they hope to get back home to their parents and the magic mirror in the basement. They agree to avoid doing anything to mess up whatever classic tale they find themselves in, until they find themselves coughing up salt water and scaring off the Little Mermaid before she rescues the prince. Abby knows that in the traditional story, the mermaid gives up her voice to the Sea Witch to become human, yet ultimately dies when the prince marries someone else. So she sets out to change the tragic tale, but between Lana the mermaid's determination, Prince Mortimer's vanity, and the Sea Witch's desire for revenge, Abby finds life in the Kingdom of Mustard is a royal pain. Mlynowski's contemporary twist on this classic tale is filled with humor. She reinvents the Sea Witch as the king's elementary school crush and the Little Mermaid as a girl with dreams beyond being married to a prince. The clever and empathetic Abby may think she's helping others, but she manages to learn a thing or two about herself in the process. The "Whatever After" series is an entertaining addition to any collection, and is a solid choice for younger readers who enjoy fairy tales but aren't quite ready for grittier retellings of the classics.
