19세기 영국 낭만주의 시대의 3대 시인 퍼시 비시 셸리의 부인이자 천재적인 여류 작가 메리 셸리의 걸작 《Frankenstein》은 《Gulliver's Travels》, 《Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde》, 《Utopia》 등과 함께 SF.공포 소설의 고전이라 불린다. 흔히 ‘프랑켄슈타인’ 하면 거대한 몸집에 흉터가 있는 얼굴, 관자놀이에 박혀 있는 나사, 섬뜩한 눈빛을 떠올리기 십상이지만, 사실 프랑켄슈타인은 작중에서 괴물을 만든 과학자다. 이 과학자는 오랜 연구 끝에 생명을 불어넣는 기술을 개발하고, 인간의 시체를 가지고 시험 삼아 괴물을 만든다. 하지만 프랑켄슈타인은 자신이 만든 괴물을 보고 놀라서 비명을 지르며 도망쳐 버리고 괴물은 어디론가 사라져 버린다. 괴물은 흉측한 자신의 모습에 환멸을 느끼고 자신을 만든 프랑켄슈타인에게 복수를 꾀한다.
1818년 메리 셸리가 맨 처음 이 작품을 익명으로 발표했을 때 그녀의 나이는 불과 스물한 살이었다. 《Frankenstein》은 1931년에 미국 유니버설 픽쳐스에서 영화로 제작돼 더욱 유명해졌다. 오늘날 전 세계인이 떠올리는 프랑켄슈타인의 이미지는 바로 이 영화에서 괴물 역을 맡았던 보리스 칼로프의 인상이 매우 강렬했기 때문이다. 영화에서는 공포영화 장르성에 중점을 두었기 때문에 과학 기술 발달의 재앙과 박애, 신의 뜻을 거스른 것에 대한 비극이라는 원작의 주제에서는 크게 벗어나 원작과는 얼마간의 차이가 있다. 메리 셸리의 장편소설 《Frankenstein》은 우리에게 생각할 거리와 여운을 제시하는데, 특히 작품 후반부에 프랑켄슈타인과 괴물이 만났을 때 괴물이 프랑켄슈타인에게 말하는 대사는 우리에게 과학 기술이 가져온 윤리적, 사회적 문제를 한 번 더 돌아보게 만든다.
