『윤곽』은 기존의 소설 양식을 과감하게 탈피한 여성 서사다. 소설은 이혼으로 삶이 무너져내린 작가가 글쓰기 강의를 하러 아테네로 떠나면서 다양한 사람을 만나는 이야기다. 레이첼 커스크는 이 작품에서 화자, 즉 ‘나’를 거의 드러내지 않고 상대의 독백에 가까운 이야기와 화자의 기억이 콜라주 기법처럼 서로 얽혀 작품의 전체 줄거리를 형성하는 방식을 택한다. 상대의 독백은 기존 이야기의 중심과 대조를 이루며 감추어져 있던 주인공의 윤곽을 서서히 드러낸다.
