세네갈의 흑인 시인 레오폴 세다르 상고르는 휴스를 가리켜 "시인으로서 가장 자연 발생적이고 표현에 있어서 가장 흑인답다"라고 찬사를 보냈으며, 비평가 헨리 루이스 게이츠가 "스털링 브라운, 조라 닐 허스턴, 랠프 엘리슨, 토니 모리슨과 같은 최고의 아프리카계 미국인의 문학 전통의 대부분은 휴스의 토착어 변형에서 생겼다"라고 평가할 만큼 할렘 르네상스 시기에 가장 큰 성공을 거두었던 이 작가는 현대 미국 흑인 문학의 새로운 전통을 수립한 문호로 꼽히고 있다.
