이 책 《시간의 기원》은 한마디로 스티븐 호킹이 세상에 남기고 간 최종 우주론의 결정판이다. 저자인 토마스 헤르토흐는 현재 벨기에 루뱅가톨릭대학교 이론물리학과 교수로, 1998년 케임브리지대학교 호킹의 박사과정생으로 들어가면서 호킹과의 인연이 시작되었다. 그때부터 20년간 저자는 호킹의 가장 가까이에서 함께 우주론을 연구하는 영광을 누렸다.

Perhaps the biggest question Stephen Hawking tried to answer in his extraordinary life was how the universe could have created conditions so perfectly hospitable to life.
