<Arrow to the Sun>의 작가 제럴드 맥더멋의 데뷔작으로 1973년 칼데콧 아너 상을 수상한 그림책이다. 리듬을 살린 시적인 글과 대담하고 선명한 색상의 기하학적인 그림이 잘 어울린다.

거미 아난시는 아프리카 서북부에 위차한 가나에 사는 아샨티 민족에게서 전해져 오는 이야기로, 세상에서 가장 훌룽한 민속 영웅 중 하나이다. 악당이자 장난꾸러기이며, 더 큰 적을 이기는 현명하고 사랑스러운 존재이다. 

아난시는 길고 험난한 여행을 떠난다. 물고기와 매에게 위협을 받지만, 여섯 아들들이 힘을 모아 아난시를 구한다. 돌아오는 길에 신비하고 아름다운 구슬을 주운 아난시는 이것을 아들에게 상으로 주려고 한다. 하지만 여섯 아들 중 누구에게 주어야 할까? 아난시는 만물의 신 니아메에게 구슬을 부탁한다. 과연 구슬은 어떤 아들의 차지가 되었을까?

In adapting this popular folktale, Gerald McDermott merges the old with the new, combining bold, rich color with traditional African design motifs and authentic Ashanti language rhythms.
