역사란 모름지기 사람들의 이야기인 터. 사람들의 이야기를 현장의 시점에서 복원하되, 사건의 이전과 이후 관련 인물들의 육성을 교차 편집한다. 역사 기술의 전통을 따르면서도 관점과 평가, 역사인식의 균형감각을 동시에 가져가려는 것이다.
미국의 유수한 서평 매체들은 셰인킨이 쓴 이 역사물이 너무나도 재미있게 읽힌다는 데 칭찬을 아끼지 않는다. 하지만 역자가 후기에서 따끔하게 지적한 대로 인간(과학자)의 천재성은 핵폭탄의 위력에 맞먹는 힘을 발휘한다는 점도 분명히 알아야 할 것이다.
