제인 오스틴의 소설 가운데 단연 가장 많은 사랑을 받고 있는 대표작이다. 애초 오스틴이 스무 살 되던 해 집필해 <첫인상>이라 이름 붙인 이 작품은, 제목처럼 다아시와 엘리자베스 두 남녀가 ‘오만’과 ‘편견’에 사로잡혀 서로에 대해 잘못된 ‘첫인상’을 갖게 되면서 겪는 갈등을 그렸다. 서로에게 끌리면서도 좀처럼 진심을 고백하지 못하는 두 사람의 아슬아슬하고도 로맨틱한 관계, 그리고 갈등을 지나 ‘진실’에 이르는 과정이 매우 흥미진진하게 펼쳐진다.

1813년 출간된 이후 수많은 문학 작품의 토대가 되어 오늘날 로맨스 소설의 고전이자 원류로도 평가받는데, 지난 2000년 이후에만 이 소설을 각색해 나온 출판물이 50편을 훌쩍 넘고, 영화나 텔레비전 시리즈로도 수차례 제작될 만큼 큰 인기를 끌면서 문학을 넘어 대중문화 전반에 지대한 영향을 미쳤다.

2003년 BBC가 실시한 조사에서 <오만과 편견>은 J. R. R. 톨킨의 <반지의 제왕>에 이어 ‘영국인이 가장 사랑한 책’ 2위에 올라, 200년이 지난 지금까지도 대중에게 강렬한 즐거움을 주는 작품임을 다시금 입증해 보였다.
