"폐기물 더미에서 발견된 충격적인 책 한 권"
작가 앨러스데어 그레이는 소각 예정이던 폐기물 더미에서 19세기 말 빅토리아 시대의 충격적인 책 한 권을 입수한다. '스코틀랜드 공중보건 담당관 아치볼드 맥캔들리스 박사의 젊은 시절 일화들'이라는 다소 평범한 제목의 기록물에는 두 눈을 의심할 수밖에 없는 내용이 담겨 있다. 바로 고드윈이라는 천재 의사가 죽은 자를 뇌 이식을 통해 살려냈다는 것과 그를 둘러싸고 벌어진 기이한 일화다. 사실 여부를 판단하기 위해 그레이는 여러 도서관과 대학교의 기록 보관소를 찾아 면밀히 조사를 진행했고, 책 속 이야기가 완전히 사실이라고 확신했다.이 문건이 다시 인쇄되어야 마땅한 '잊힌 걸작'이라 여긴 그레이는 실제 텍스트와 삽화를 원본 그대로 보존하고 책 제목만 <가여운 것들>이라고 바꾸어 출간한다. 객관성을 유지하기 위해 그가 찾은 기록 보관소의 다양한 문헌과, 저자 맥캔들리스의 부인이자 의학박사인 빅토리아가 남긴 강력한 비판조의 편지도 첨부했다. 이 이야기는 빅토리아의 말대로 “단연코 가장 병적인 세기라 할 수 있는 19세기에 존재한 모든 병적인 것들의 냄새”를 풍기는 거짓말일까, 시대의 명암을 날카롭게 파고드는 걸작일까. 판단은 <가여운 것들>을 손에 든 독자의 몫이다. 영화 '더 랍스터'의 감독 요르고스 란티모스가 제작하고 엠마 스톤, 윌렘 데포, 마크 러팔로가 출연하는 영화로 만들어져 9월 국내 개봉을 앞두고 있다.
