미국 태생의 동화 작가 잭 갠토스가 자전적 이야기를 바탕으로 창작한 청소년소설입니다. 1960년대 초반 미국에 자리한 공동체 마을 '노벨트'에 사는 열두 살 소년 '잭'이, 외출 금지를 받은 이후 부고 기사를 빌미로 기상천외한 역사 수업을 받게 된 방학 이야기를 담았습니다.

잭은 방학을 맞아 신나게 놀 생각에 부풀었지만 뜻하지 않은 일로 외출 금지를 당해요. 방학 동안 집에서 한 걸음도 나갈 수 없게 되었답니다. 방학 첫 날 아빠가 손도 대지 말라고 한 총을 가지고 놀다가 사고를 냈거든요. 엄마가 애지중지 기르는 옥수수도 베어버렸거든요. 잭은 마을 사람들 중에 누군가 죽어서 부고 기사를 쓸 일이 생길 때만 집에서 나갈 수 있대요. 부고 기사를 쓰는 이웃의 볼커 할머니가 손이 굳어 잭에게 도움을 요청한 것인데…….
