자신의 이름도, 나이도 모르는 ‘꼬마 도둑’의 시선으로 홀로코스트의 참혹상을 그려낸 청소년 문학서. 순진무구한 아이의 눈에 비친 나치의 유대인 박해를 냉정하리만큼 담담하게 전달하고 생생하게 재현한다.
특히 어린이들의 처참한 생활상을 사실적으로 드러내어 전쟁의 가장 큰 희생양이 어린이임을 환기시키는 작품이다.
제2차 세계대전 당시 나치가 점령한 폴란드 바르샤바, 자신을 ‘도둑’이라고 소개하는 아이가 있다. 아이는 빵을 훔치던 중 유리라는 유대인 소년을 만나게 되고, ‘미샤’라는 이름과 ‘집시’라는 정체성을 부여받는다. 또한 고집스럽고 제멋대로인 소녀 제니나와 그의 가족들, 고아들을 친자식처럼 아끼고 돌보는 코르착 박사를 만나 가족 같은 유대감을 느끼게 된다.
나치의 유대인 박해가 심해지면서 바르샤바 내 모든 유대인들은 게토(유대인 강제 거주 지역)에 갇히게 되고 추위와 굶주림으로 인해 서서히 죽어간다. 이에 미샤는 제니나의 가족들과 코르착 박사의 고아들을 위해 음식을 훔친다. 매일 밤 생명을 담보로 장벽을 넘나드는 날들, 생지옥과 같은 게토에 갇힌 상황에서도 미샤와 제니나는 ‘우유풀’을 날리며 한 점 희망을 느끼는데....
